A guardian ad litem serves at the order of a court to represent "the best interests" of an alleged incapacited person. The duty of a guardian ad litem in the context of adult guardianships is: 1) to determine if the alleged incapacitated person is in need of a guardian; and 2) to determine who the best guardian would be. The guardian ad litem meets with involved parties and the ward. He/she can obtain medical records and other information. The guardian ad litem will report to the court and make recommendatins on the findings. Mary uses her mediation skills in contested guardianship matters to assist families in doing what is best for the alleged protected person.
